What Carpool keeps, and who sees it

Carpool is a small tool Vancity Connect runs for its events. It keeps only what's needed to sort out rides, and deletes your details a week after the event.

What's stored

Who can see it

Everyone with the event link sees first names and neighbourhoods, never addresses or phone numbers. If you ride, the driver of your car sees your phone number and pickup address so they can come and get you, and you see the driver's phone number. Riders never see each other's details, and all of this lasts only while you're in that car. The organizer sees everything, to sort out the cars.

On your phone

A private key, kept in a cookie and in the phone's storage, remembers that this phone joined, so you can change your details or switch cars ("Copy my private link" opens your spot on another phone; leaving forgets it). Your phone also keeps your name, phone, seats and address so the next join form is filled in for you; that stays on the phone until you join. There are no tracking or advertising cookies.

Other services

Carpool runs on Cloudflare. Addresses you type are looked up with Google Maps to place them on the route and name the neighbourhood. If Google can't find one, the text you typed may be sent once to Claude (Anthropic) to tidy it up before trying again. Upcoming events come from the public Vancity Connect Luma calendar. Nobody pays through Carpool: the chip-in is a suggestion.

Deleting things

Names, phone numbers, addresses and cars are deleted 7 days after the event; only the event and how many people drove or rode are kept. You can remove yourself from a carpool at any time, and the organizer can delete the whole carpool. To have something removed sooner, ask the organizer or contact Vancity Connect.
